Memoir, Meaning & Mission
Jan M. Hanson is a lifelong storyteller, nonprofit founder, former banking executive, and proud Minnesotan turned Wyoming cowgirl. After two decades in finance and marketing, she followed a stirring in her soul and founded 200 Orphanages Worldwide in 2007. Since then, she has helped raise over $1 million for orphan care projects across 17 countries, offering safety, shelter, and sustainability to thousands of vulnerable children.
Her writing and photography reflect the life she’s lived, spanning boardrooms and barn stalls, Peruvian orphanages and quiet Arizona patios. These essays and reflections form the foundation of her debut memoir-in-progress, Something More: A Memoir of Service to Orphans.
Told with humor, heart, and hard-earned wisdom, Something More traces how a $25 membership to the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, a horseback ride through fear, and a whispered “what if” blossomed into a global mission. It’s a story of legacy, faith, and the belief that the smallest act of courage can change everything.
Jan’s voice is grounded in land, family, and the deep desire to make a difference. Her work invites readers into an honest conversation about meaning, calling, and what it looks like to serve, even when the road is uncertain and your boots are muddy.

Something More: A Memoir of Service to Orphans
“I don’t know how I would help orphans… but I would try.”
This memoir traces the story of how a classified ad in Horse Illustrated led Jan from a Minnesota bank boardroom to orphan homes in Peru, Tanzania, and India, and into the lives of thousands of children around the world.

Her Story
Jan M. Hanson is a natural writer with a heart for service, a deep sense of purpose, and a gift for turning quiet moments into meaningful narratives. Her writing journey began in childhood, when her father, rarely one for compliments, told her how much he enjoyed reading her letters. His words made an indelible mark on her sixth-grade heart, and Jan has been writing ever since.
In 2007, Jan launched 200 Orphanages Worldwide, a nonprofit dedicated to raising funds for orphan care projects in developing countries. The organization has since supported life-changing projects in places like Peru, Tanzania, India, Haiti, and beyond.
Today, Jan serves as the Executive Director, overseeing strategy, development, and donor storytelling. She brings the same passion to writing that she does to every aspect of her work. Her upcoming memoir, Something More, weaves together reflections on service, transformation, and what it means to listen to the quiet nudge of calling, and follow it.
She now splits her time between the wide skies of Wyoming and the sun-drenched patios of Arizona, often with her horse Krizzy nearby, a journal in hand, and her next story already unfolding.
